| Borough Market, London |
Client: Trustees of the
Borough Market
Borough Market is London’s oldest wholesale market, having traded
from its present site since 1756. The team have been involved in all
aspects of the renaissance of the market since 1995, after winning
an architectural competition staged by RIBA for the Trustees of The
Borough Market. The Trustees, at that time, were looking to exploit
the large amount of empty space created by the shrinkage of the wholesale
market. They were also faced with the problem of a severe physical
deterioration of the market structures at the same time as the market’s
income was declining.
The team have been responsible for the complete design and contract
management process for the refurbishment of the market including the
re-erection of the historic Floral Hall from Covent Garden. Also responsible
for constructing applications to a range of public agencies to fund
the refurbishment process, the team have been intimately involved
in the creation of the new quality food market that has grown from
6 stalls in 1998 to over 100 stalls today. The team has extensive
knowledge and experience of the “small producer” sector
and the speciality food market sector more generally. The success
of the Borough Market was recognised by the Observer Food magazine
with the award of the “Best Market in the UK” award in
2004. Most recently, the team have been responsible for the publication
of the “Borough Market Book”. |
